Supply Chain Management for the Hobby Sector
How to support a client in managing their supply chain with a tailored service capable of combining the efficiency of maritime transport with the advantages of a bonded warehouse.
A leading company in the hobby sector entrusted us with managing a logistics operation: the transport of a significant quantity of air conditioning units from Shanghai to our bonded warehouse in Cesena. This request arose from the need to build up inventory ahead of the upcoming summer season—a strategic requirement to ensure continuity of sales and meet growing market demand.
MWM provided a complete door-to-door service, overseeing the entire supply chain: from collection of the goods at the port of departure to storage in our bonded warehouses.
Shipment Objectives and Choice of Sea Freight
Why was sea freight the ideal choice?
The operation involved the transport of 10 fully loaded 40-foot containers of air conditioning units—a substantial volume that made sea freight the most cost-effective solution. This mode proved ideal for several reasons:
- Flexibility: the ability to handle large volumes with optimised costs.
- Cost efficiency: maritime transport offers more competitive rates compared to other modes.
- Logistical strategy: the use of standardised containers streamlines the entire logistics process, from initial shipment to final storage.
Our solution combined the cost advantages of sea freight with the benefits of a bonded warehouse, enabling the client to achieve an efficient and economical supply chain.

Supply Chain Management: Our Process
- Coordination with Partners in China
We initiated the shipment by collaborating with our local partners in Shanghai. This initial phase included:
Incoterm definition: the choice of CIF (Cost, Insurance and Freight) allowed our client to benefit from clear cost allocation and responsibilities.
Documentation preparation: packing lists, invoices and all necessary documentation were handled quickly and accurately, avoiding delays. - Departure from the Port of Shanghai
The containers were loaded and shipped from the Port of Shanghai. From there, they travelled for approximately 30 days to the Port of Ravenna, passing through the Suez Canal.
- Customs Operations and Inland Transport
After unloading, the containers were transferred to our bonded warehouse in Cesena under a T1 transit document. Here, the goods were unloaded and stored under customs bond, allowing the client to defer payment of duties and VAT.
Benefits for the Client
The operation delivered numerous economic and strategic advantages, demonstrating the effectiveness of our logistics management. Key benefits include:
- Significant Cost Savings
• Sea freight reduced costs compared to alternative transport solutions.
• Thanks to the bonded warehouse, the client was able to defer payment of duties and VAT, maintaining positive cash flow. - Constant Availability of Goods
Storage in our bonded warehouses ensured immediate access to the air conditioning units, enabling the client to respond swiftly to market demand. - Maximum Operational Flexibility
The combination of sea freight and bonded storage provided an optimal balance between costs, delivery times and inventory management flexibility.
The Importance of the CIF Incoterm
The choice of the CIF Incoterm proved crucial to the success of the operation. This term enabled the seller to:
- Manage the transport contract and insurance, ensuring the client was protected against potential risks during transit.
- Cover costs up to the Port of Ravenna, simplifying responsibilities for our client.
Thanks to this approach, every stage of the shipment was handled smoothly and without complications. This case history clearly demonstrates how careful and integrated supply chain management can effectively meet even the most complex client requirements.
